"If you can't defend yourself while standing and on the ground then you DON'T know
how to defend yourself...
"95% of all self-defense situations end up on the ground or in the grappling
range... Grappling is the most neglected range of self-defense in most martial art systems."
Jiu-Jitsu, the oldest form of Martial Art, originated in India more than 3,000
years ago, spread through China, and eventually settled in Japan. In 1914,
Japanese Jiu-Jitsu champions Esai Maeda and Inomata brought the art to Brazil, where they taught it to the son of a Brazilian politician, Carlos Gracie. In 1925, Carlos and his brothers opened the first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was first introduced in the United States about twenty years
ago, and today it is the fastest growing Martial Art in the US. It focuses on
ground-fighting, or grappling, techniques and uses basic principles of leverage which enable smaller practitioners to control, defeat and escape from bigger opponents. For these reasons, it is the most applicable Martial Art for both men and women seeking effective self-defense training.
Because Master Moses wants his students to be prepared for any situation on the
street, the curriculum includes “Street Application” of BJJ techniques. By adapting the sport of BJJ to address the street environment (i.e. multiple opponents, weapons, no-gi, unorthodox attacks), students (among them police officers and elite military personnel), are able to address real life and death situations.
Because BJJ is so new in the United States, it is very unique for an American BJJ
Academy to have even one Black Belt instructor – Mike Moses’ EVOLVE Martial Arts
Academy has three! Along with Master Moses, Nakapan Phungephorn and Todd Margolis
are renowned in the national and international grappling community for their
fighting and instructing prowess. We have one of the strongest competition
teams around.
